We’ve gathered some steps to help users change the language settings on their computers and devices in order for them to enjoy the best experience with our website. Please note that as web browsers and online platforms evolve, some of these directions may become outdated or change, and unfortunately Springer Industrial can’t be responsible for the accuracy of this information.

Google Chrome

Windows Desktop

On Windows, you can set Chrome to show all settings and menus in the language you want. This option is only available on Windows computers.

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click More (three dot icon) > Settings
  3. On the left, click Languages
  4. Under “Preferred languages,” next to the language you’d like to use, click More
  5. If the language isn’t listed, add it by clicking Add languages
  6. Click Display Google Chrome in this language
  7. Relaunch Chrome to apply the changes
  8. The settings should open back up after the relaunch; when it does, scroll down to Google Translate and select which language you would like sites translated to
  9. Underneath “never offer to translate these languages” remove other languages that you do not know
Mac Desktop
  1. Open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click More (three dot icon) > Settings
  3. On the left, click Languages
  4. Under “Preferred languages,” add the desired language then remove the other languages listed so that the desired language now has “This language is used when translating pages” written below it.
  5. Relaunch Chrome to apply the change
Android Phones

For Android phones, you can choose the default language of your Chrome app’s menus and settings.

  • Open the Chrome app
  • To the right of the address bar, tap More (three dot icon) > Settings > Languages
  • Under “Chrome’s language,” tap the current language
  • From the language list, select the language you want
  • After the language downloads, in the toolbar, tap Restart
  • The download is complete when you find “Language ready” under your new language
iPhone Or iPad

When you come across a page written in a language you don’t understand, you can use Chrome to translate the page:

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Chrome app
  2. Go to a webpage written in another language
  3. At the bottom right of your screen, tap More (three dot icon) > Translate 
  4. The page will automatically translate to your device’s preferred language
    • Settings (gear icon) should appear after the translation; click the icon and select the language you want the page translated to if it differs from your device’s preferred language

To change the default language:

  1. Tap Settings (gear icon) > More languages and choose the language you want
  2. Chrome will translate the webpage this one time
    • To always translate pages in this language, select Settings (gear icon) > always translate [language]

Microsoft Edge

The new Microsoft Edge defaults to use the same language as your system. To change the language:

  1. Go to Settings and more > Settings
  2. Select Languages from the Settings list
  3. To add a language to the list of Preferred languages, select Add languages
  4. Once the language is added, select next to the language, and then choose Display Microsoft Edge in this language
  5. Restart your browser

Note: You may need to edit the list of preferred languages in your settings depending on what language the original site uses and what language you’re looking to view it in.

Firefox

Windows Desktop

You can switch languages at any time to display Firefox menus, notifications, and messages in a different language.

  1. Open Firefox
  2. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and select Preferences
  3. In the Language section of the General panel, choose a language in the drop-down menu.
  4. Restart Firefox

Note: If you are using Firefox Developer Edition or Firefox Nightly, you will need to download a new copy in the language you wish to use from the Mozilla website.

Set an order of preference for languages:
If a Firefox feature is not available in your top language, Firefox will display your next preferred language.

  1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and select Preferences
  2. In the Language section of the General panel, click Set Alternatives to open the Firefox Language Settings window
  3. Select a language and use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to change the order, or Remove to pull a language out from the list
Mac Desktop
  1. Open Firefox
  2. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and select Settings
  3. In the Language section of the General panel, choose a language in the drop-down menu.
  4. Restart Firefox

Safari (Mac)

If a webpage can be translated into one of your preferred languages, you can have Safari translate it.

  1. In the Safari app on your Mac, go to the webpage you want to translate.
  2. If the webpage can be translated, the Smart Search field displays the Translate button/icon.
  3. Click the Translate button/iconthen choose a language.

Although your Mac is set to display the language of the country or region in which it was purchased, you can choose a different language to use. You can also choose different languages for individual apps.

Change the system language:

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click General (gear icon) in the sidebar, then click Language & Region on the right. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Under Preferred Languages, do any of the following:
    • Add a language: Click the Add button (plus icon)select one or more languages in the list, then click Add.
      The list is divided by a separator line. Languages above the line are system languages that are fully supported by macOS and are shown in menus, notifications, websites and more. Languages below the line aren’t fully supported by macOS, but may be supported by apps that you use, and on some websites.
    • Change the primary language: Drag a language to the top of the languages list.
      Note: You may need to restart your Mac to see the change in all applications.
      If macOS or an app supports the primary language, menus and notifications are shown in that language. If it doesn’t, it uses the next language in the list, and so on. The language may also be used on websites that support it.

Choose the language you use for individual apps:

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click General (gear icon) in the sidebar, then click Language & Region on the right. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Go to Applications, then do any of the following:
    • Choose a language for an app: Click the Add button (plus icon)choose an app and a language from the pop-up menus, then click Add.
    • Change the language for an app in the list: Select the app, then choose a new language from the pop-up menu.
    • Remove an app from the list: Select the app, then click the Remove button (minus icon)The app uses the default language again.

If the app is open, you may need to close and then reopen it to see the change.
